GIFT-SPU 2025: SPUIC Champions the Future of EFL Education with AI Innovation

Bangkok, 29 August 2025 – Sripatum University International College (SPUIC) hosted GIFT-SPU 2025: Transforming EFL Education Through AI Innovation, a full-day event spotlighting innovative approaches to English as a Foreign Language (EFL) teaching and the transformative role of Generative AI in education.

The morning sessions brought together distinguished educators to share strategies that strengthen multilingual learning across disciplines. Ian William Slater introduced an anthology of short stories curated for non-native speakers, designed with careful attention to text length and accessibility. Greg Dawson demonstrated structured classroom practices, emphasizing grouping techniques, timing, board management, and error correction. Meanwhile, Dr. David Bollen presented his research on second-language vocabulary acquisition, offering top-down and bottom-up methods to help students build the academic vocabulary essential for long-term success.
These workshops underscored that EFL tools are not only central to language instruction but also critical to enhancing overall learning outcomes across diverse academic fields at SPU.

In the afternoon, the focus turned to the future of education powered by technology. Dr. Bollen and Edward Rubesch led discussions on the opportunities and challenges of applying large language models (LLMs) to multilingual product ideation. Dennis Zaw and Rubesch facilitated a hands-on learning lab, guiding participants through the development of simple AI-assisted web applications for language learning. At the same time, Tina Rodvong and Rubesch showcased how AI can strengthen curriculum design by mapping course content to program objectives, identifying gaps, and improving outcomes.

The event concluded with the announcement of SPUIC’s AI-powered student chatbot project, an initiative beginning with the collection of frequently asked questions to deliver faster, more efficient academic support.

“GIFT-SPU 2025 illustrates SPUIC’s vision of integrating academic excellence with innovation, equipping students with the skills and adaptability to thrive in a future shaped by AI and multilingualism,” said Kanjana Hannon, Dean of SPUIC.

With its seamless blend of pedagogy and technology, SPUIC continues to establish itself as a forward-thinking institution—one that not only embraces the challenges of a changing educational landscape but also sets new benchmarks for innovation in higher learning.
